The consortium behind the CropExplore for Farmers project have convened at KU Leuven’s TRANSfarm for a meeting. The event last week marked an important milestone in the project, with the announcement of a new tool developed for farmers and bioeconomy companies. Additionally, Biocon shared their latest achievement in hemp processing, and participants were treated to a guided tour of the cutting-edge facilities at TRANSfarm, including a visit to the biocon pilot plant.

Launch of the ‘CropExplore for Farmers’ tool

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the launch of the new 'CropExplore for Farmers' tool. Developed by ILVO (Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) in collaboration with partners from the CropExplore for Farmers project, this tool serves as a comprehensive resource for farmers and companies within the bioeconomy sector. It offers detailed information on more than 200 agricultural crops, covering critical aspects such as cultivation techniques, mechanization options, and potential bioeconomy applications.

The tool is particularly valuable for farmers seeking to diversify their crop rotations. By using various filters—such as crop type (e.g., protein-rich, fiber, or essential oil crops) and commodity composition (e.g., protein content or dry matter)—farmers can identify the crops most suited to their specific needs. In addition, the tool provides data on current acreage in Flanders and Europe, harvest windows, and profitability estimates, making it an essential resource for those aiming to optimize their crop choices.

Beyond its use for farmers, the tool is also designed for bioeconomy companies searching for sustainable, bio-based raw materials for their products. From food to chemicals and even construction materials, this tool helps bridge the gap between agricultural innovation and industrial demand for new, locally-sourced resources. The 'CropExplore for Farmers' tool will be officially launched at Agriflanders, where attendees can test it firsthand.

Hemp processing

Another announcement came from Biocon, which reported significant progress in their efforts to extract lignin from hemp at a pilot scale. Lignin, a valuable component with potential uses in a range of industrial applications, was successfully extracted in Biocon’s pilot plant, located at KU Leuven's TRANSfarm. This development represents a significant step forward in the wider valorization of hemp within the bioeconomy, offering new possibilities from farmers to the chemical industry. The success of this pilot-scale extraction demonstrates the potential of hemp as a versatile and profitable crop for farmers in the region, aligning with the broader goals of the CropExplore for Farmers project.

CropExplore for Farmers: aiming for sustainable agricultural innovation

The CropExplore for Farmers project itself addresses a pressing need within the Flemish bioeconomy: how to identify new crops with the greatest potential for cultivation and processing. The project’s research is driven by both the demands of farmers, who are increasingly looking to diversify their crops, and the processing industries, which are seeking more sustainable raw materials amidst growing environmental and supply chain pressures.

Guided Tour of TRANSfarm

The meeting concluded with a guided tour of KU Leuven’s TRANSfarm facilities, providing participants with a firsthand look at the university's agricultural research capabilities. TRANSfarm, part of KU Leuven's Science and Technology Group, has undergone a complete transformation over the past three years, evolving into a modern and sustainable farming complex. The site includes state-of-the-art barns for zootechnical trials, high-tech labs, and facilities designed for biomedical research. The group also visited Biocon’s pilot plant, where the successful hemp lignin extraction was conducted.

During the tour, participants gained insight into TRANSfarm’s commitment to sustainability and circularity, principles that form the foundation of their research projects. From animal research to crop development and technological innovations, the facilities at TRANSfarm support a wide range of interdisciplinary research aimed at advancing sustainable agriculture and bioeconomy solutions.
