An exclusive matching event: bridging knowledge and demand for knowledge for the chemical industry within the trilateral region.

Trilateral matching event 2024

In the heart of the Netherlands, Flanders, and North Rhine-Westphalia lies 40% of Europe's dynamic chemical industry. In this pivotal moment, as the industry undergoes a remarkable shift towards sustainability and circular practices, our regions witness a surge in novel developments, particularly in alternative raw materials (such as recycled carbon, biobased, CO/CO2) and innovative processes (e.g., electrochemistry, plasma technology).

The ‘Trilateral strategy for the chemical industry’ is a cross-border cooperation between the Netherlands, Flanders and North Rhine-Westphalia. In September 2017, the Ministry of Economics, Innovation, Digitalisation & Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Department of Economy, Science & Innovation of the Flemish Region and the Netherlands Ministry for Economic Affairs presented a joint vision and strategy on the future improvement of this flagship industry. To strengthen the innovation and competitiveness of the chemical industry in this region, a comprehensive joint industry-government partnership between these three regions has been established with active participation of essenscia Flanders, VCI-NRW and VNCI (Netherlands). This partnership is based on the vision set out in the trilateral strategy and will help the industry to achieve the potential growth opportunities that have been identified.

About the Event

This unique matching event is tailored for those pioneering new knowledge and insights that have matured to a point where they are ripe for application on a pilot/demo scale (TRL 5+). Each participant will have the opportunity to tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience within the regions, addressing their inquiries and engaging in collaborative brainstorming with peers. Moreover, participants can seize the chance to spotlight their expertise among interested parties.

For whom?

  • Knowledge institutions with groundbreaking technologies/processes ready for pilot/demo testing.
  • (multinational) Companies with knowledge queries seeking answers from other industry players.
  • Start-ups/scale-ups on the lookout for partners to propel their initiatives forward.
  • Companies with sustainability concepts eager to test them within a collaborative peer setting.
  • Entities seeking insights into "where specific knowledge" is actively being developed.
  • Parties keen on brainstorming with the most advanced knowledge partners for innovative solution directions.
  • Parties looking for value chain partners for a specific product or project.

Thematic Round table discussions

Participants can engage in in-depth discussions during two breakout rounds. Each round consists of multiple parallel break-out sessions. Participants attend their preferred session. Each session is hosted by a company or institute presenting their innovation challenge or case. A total of fifteen companies/institutes (five from each region) will host the sessions. This dynamic setup in small, dedicated groups promises rich interactions and potential cross-border partnerships, fostering a collective advancement towards a sustainable future for the chemical industry.

Confirmed session hosting companies & institutes already include Johnson & Johnson, Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma Services, Ecover, and D-CRBN, DSM & ELECTRA all of which are eager to explore new cross-border collaborations. More session hosts will be announced soon.

The breakout session rounds will focus on diverse themes such as carbon capture, new catalysts, electrification of chemical processes, industrial process optimisation with AI, biobased value chains, circularity, advanced sustainable products, recycling of polymers, advanced recycling of textiles, and more. The themes will reflect the industry's shift towards sustainability and circular practices.

The complete program will be available next month, promising a comprehensive and engaging agenda for all attendees. Participants will be able to pick their preferred breakout sessions in advance.
