From September, Flemish SMEs can apply for support from VLAIO to test the feasibility of scaling up a bio-based application via pilot infrastructure.

Scaling up

Before a new biobased application effectively enters the market, an extensive scaling-up process takes place. To support SMEs in this process, in a low-threshold way, VLAIO launches the call "Pilot trajectories biobased applications" from mid-September 2021.

Pilot routes

Within the call, Flemish SMEs can apply for support to test via pilot infrastructure whether scaling up a biobased application is feasible (TRL4-7). Focus of the project proposals should be on scale-up and demo activities. Specifically, this means that the application already has sufficient maturity at the start of the project (proof-of-concept on an experimental scale), but that commercial roll-out is not yet possible.

Conditions

All SMEs with operational activities in Flanders can respond to this call. This requires cooperation, in subcontracting, with a pilot infrastructure registered as a service provider for the SME portfolio. More details on the conditions, and on the evaluation criteria, can be found on the VLAIO website.

Grant rate and duration

The subsidy for pilot projects is determined on the basis of the project budget. The subsidy rate is 45% for small enterprises and 35% for medium-sized enterprises. It amounts to a minimum of €20,000 and a maximum of €100,000.

The project duration is maximum 1 year (expandable to maximum 2 years if justified).

Info session

On 26 August, VLAIO is organising an online info session from 10 am to give interested SMEs more information about the call. You can register for this session via the VLAIO website.
